Being unwell or having some such changes in the body which cause many problems for us and for which we need medical treatment, all these things point towards the disease occurring in the body which is the basic concept of medical science. When due to any deficiency our body and body parts are unable to do their work properly, then this deficiency is called the disease of our body. Many internal and external factors are responsible for these diseases which make us sick. There are many different reasons for the occurrence of these diseases, due to which we define them in different forms. Some diseases are often spread from person to person through a mutual contact and make them sick. Such diseases are commonly defined as infectious diseases. In today's world, these infectious diseases have become a matter of particularly serious concern, especially because of a long-running coronavirus. We can get an idea of how serious this infectious disease is for us from Covid-19, which had engulfed more than half of the world's population.

All these pathogens named protozoa, yeast, bacteria, viruses, fungi, and micro-parasites are considered to be the cause of infectious diseases that grow by reaching a person's body, multiplying their number rapidly, and then transmitted from one human body to another. This process of infectious disease continues by forming a very large chain and thus engulfs people. These diseases spread and infect through direct or indirect contact through persons, consumption of substances contaminated with specific elements, pathogens, and close contact with each other. Although some diseases are germ-borne, they do not spread from person to person. Such diseases infect people through external factors such as bacteria, viruses, some insects, or other animals.

Causes of Infectious Diseases

A person can get infectious diseases due to many reasons -

  1. Microorganism

The main reasons for the development of infectious diseases are microorganisms that enter a person's body and infect them. These microorganisms are present in many forms which include -

  • Virus: These microbes enter a person's body and attack healthy cells and double their numbers. These viruses cause many diseases from the common cold to AIDS.
  • Bacteria: These microbes are small, single-celled organisms capable of causing disease in a person's body. These single-celled organisms are responsible for diseases such as strep throat, urinary tract infections, and tuberculosis.
  • Fungi: These include many different types of fungi. Many skin diseases, such as ringworm and athlete's foot, are caused by these fungi. Other types of fungus can infect a person's lungs or nervous system.
  • Parasites: These organisms live inside the host body causing disease. Malaria is caused by a small parasite that is transmitted through mosquito bites. Other parasites can be transmitted from animal feces to humans.
  1. Direct contact

Most infectious diseases are spread from person to person through direct contact, including -

  • Person-To-Person: In many cases, direct contact with a sick person, either through skin-to-skin contact, sexual contact, or touching something that another person has touched, transmits the disease to another person.
  • Animal-To-Person: Being bitten or scratched by an infected animal or touching an infected pet, their saliva, hair, etc, can make a person sick and in some circumstances, it can be fatal for them.
  • Mother- To- Unborn child: If a pregnant woman is infected, she can pass germs present in her body to the unborn child which can infect the baby. Some germs can also pass to the baby through the placenta or breast milk.
  1. Indirect contact

In some cases, infectious diseases reach the person's body through indirect contact, by which the following factors may be responsible -

  • Through Air

Many bacteria travel through the air over long periods in small particles. Healthy people inhale these particles and later become ill. Only a few diseases are spread by airborne transmission, including tuberculosis and the rubella virus.

  • Food Contamination

When a person consumes contaminated water and food, the germs present in the food and water can infect them. This type of indirect contact infects many people at the same time.

  • Insect Bite

Some germs are present in insect carriers such as mosquitoes, fleas, lice, or ticks, and when these insect carriers bite a person's skin, these germs enter their body. These insect carriers are known as vectors.
