Sleep Apnea Treatment

Overview

During sleep when a person stops breathing for a few moments, this sleep disorder is known as sleep apnea. In the case of sleep apnea, the person's breathing and respiratory function are interrupted, due to which he is unable to get enough oxygen and gets up from sleep in a panic. This problem causes a person to have difficulty in taking oxygen by stopping the breath for few seconds to minutes and more than once in the same night. During sleep apnea, the upper airway of the person's windpipe is repeatedly blocked, by which the airflow does not flow properly and the person's breathing stops for a few moments. When the breath breaks, the person's sleep is disturbed and he starts gasping rapidly and feels strange nervousness. Many times sleep apnea causes sleepiness more than once due to the breakdown of breath when the brain and the rest of the body are not getting enough oxygen.

Causes of Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea can occur to a person due to various reasons -

  • Obesity

The excess weight of the person may promote sleep apnea. Due to the increased weight of the body, there is also excess fat in the neck of the person. When the person sleeps, due to excess fat in the neck, their upper airways get blocked and the person starts having this problem.

  • Genetic disorder

Certain genetic disorders such as cleft lips and down syndrome may be responsible for the condition of sleep apnea. These genetic syndromes affect the structure of the face or brain, as well as these disorders, cause sleep apnea due to small facial bones and small tongue.

  • Brain infection

Infections in different parts of the brain can also cause sleep apnea with various diseases. This infection can be caused by a virus, bacteria, protozoa, or parasite that causes many serious conditions for the person and causes sleep apnea.

  • Hormonal problems

Some health problems related to excessive production of hormones in the person can increase the risk of sleep apnea. These problems include endocrine disorder, hypothyroidism, acromegaly (increased levels of growth hormone), polycystic ovary syndrome, etc, which can cause sleep apnea.

  • Tonsils

Tonsils due to viral infections and other causes such as tonsillitis, staphylococcus aureus, mycoplasma pneumonia, etc also increase the risk of sleep apnea for them. It seems that the flow of air in the person's throat and respiratory tract gets blocked, which causes them to suffer from sleep apnea.

  • Diseases affecting the nervous system

Problems or illnesses that affect a person's nervous system can cause sleep apnea. In such neuromuscular conditions, a person's brain is not able to pass information to the airways and chest muscles, which increases the risk of sleep apnea. Many neuromuscular conditions such as stroke, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, myotonic dystrophy, post-polio syndrome, dermatomyositis, myasthenia gravis, and Lambert-et myasthenic syndrome can cause sleep apnea.

  • Heart and kidney problems

People who have problems such as heart and kidney failure may have a higher risk of sleep apnea. Fluid begins to accumulate in the neck of individuals with these types of problems. This fluid blocks the airways and leads to sleep apnea.

In obstructive sleep apnea, the upper throat muscles relax during sleep by which the back of the throat becomes relaxed. The soft tissues close and block the airways. About 90-96 percent of cases of sleep apnea are associated with it.
