Sciatica Treatment

Overview

Overview - According to the research, nearly 60% of the people in India suffer from low back pain at some point in their life.

The largest, widest and longest nerve is found in a person's body which is known as the sciatic nerve. This nerve is the most important nerve of the body that goes from the lower back to the bottom of the foot and the toes. This nerve is scattered through the spinal cord in the form of branches up to the bottom of both the legs through the person's hip and buttocks.

Sciatica is known as Gridhrasi (Gridhra means Eagle) in Ayurveda because the affected person's gait resembles an eagle's walk and the inflamed nerve resembles an eagle's beak.

Ayurvedic treatment aims to restore equilibrium by correcting the underlying functional disequilibrium. Ayurvedic treatments for sciatica focus on restoring the aggravated vata or vata kaphato to a state of equilibrium and thus to health. The majority of patients find that our treatment relieves their symptoms in four to six weeks. In the case of Sciatica, Ayurveda is a better alternative to surgery.

When there is some reason for pressure on the sciatic veins, or when swelling or any kind of problem arises in it then the person starts severe pain from the lower part of the body to the feet. This pain in the person's waist, hip or buttocks reaches a moderate to severe state which often becomes unbearable for them. This condition is called sciatica. Sciatica causes a person to feel weakness or numbness in the affected lower back. Mostly there is more pain in the back part of the knee and ankle, and there is a feeling of weakness and shrinkage in their legs which causes them to walk.

Causes of  Sciatica

Sciatica occurs most frequently when a herniated disc narrows the spinal cord or spinal narrowing nerve portion, for which the following reasons may be responsible -

  • Obesity

The excess body weight puts pressure on the person's spine, causing many disorders related to the spine to cause the person to suffer from sciatica. In general, obese individuals tend to see this problem more often than underweight people.

  • Wrong posture

Staying in the wrong posture for a long time affects the spinal cord, which can lead to the development of a herniated spinal disc. This problem definitely produces spasms in the spinal cord and lower part of the body that lead to the condition of sciatica. Keep the shoulders and waist forward, wear heels, sitting in the same position for a long time or sleeping side by side for hours, all these conditions cause sciatica.

  • Occupation

Some occupations in which the workload of physical activities is very high, such as overuse of the back for lifting and moving heavy objects from one place to another, a long stand on the feet, frequent bending of the waist helps to increase the risk of sciatica.

  • Pregnancy

In most cases, there is backache in women during pregnancy which is caused due to tension in muscles and unstable joints of pregnant women. This is the reason that almost eighty percent of women have this problem during pregnancy.

  • Physical inactivity

A physically inactive person has to face many health problems as well as problems like sciatica. Sitting in position or remaining motionless throughout the day increases the pressure on the nerve. Prolonged inactivity makes the back hard and weak due to which the pain in the person increases. This back pain makes the person more inactive which causes problems with sciatica.

  • Smoking

A person's excessive smoking habit contributes to a high risk of sciatica. For a person who has been smoking for a very long time during his lifetime after a while, the blood flow in his spine starts to decrease. This low blood flow causes degenerative disc disease which badly affects the sciatica nerve and causes the person to develop sciatica disease.

  • Some diseases

Some of the following diseases cause pressure on the sciatica nerve that causes the person seems to have this problem -

  • Spinal stenosis: A disease in which the spinal canal, called spinal canals gets contracted.
  • Degenerative Disc Disease: Disc breaking which acts as a cushion between the vertebrae
  • Spondylolisthesis: Slipping of one vertebrae over another vertebrae
  • Muscle cramp: Muscle spasm or stiffness in the back or buttocks

Prevention from Sciatica

By adopting some healthy and necessary changes, a person can prevent the problem of sciatica from developing. These changes are -

  • A person should reduce his increased weight and stop gaining weight so that the additional pressure on his joints can be reduced.
  • One should not stay in a posture for a long time that puts pressure on their spinal cord.
  • Exercise, muscle strength and activity are maintained through these activities. Hence the person should start regular walks, exercising and workout etc.
  • People should quit their smoking habit.
  • A person should refrain from performing tasks that affect their spinal cord.
  • A person should consume rich foods.
  • One should keep the body active through maximum physical activity.

Symptoms of Sciatica

The following symptoms and signs are found in a person suffering from sciatica-

  • Lower body, pain in back legs and buttocks

Types of Sciatica

The types of sciatica include -

  • Acute sciatica

Sudden sciatica pain that usually resolves over several days to weeks comes under acute sciatica. Acute sciatica pain occurs in a person's spinal joints, discs, nerves, muscles, and ligaments. Usually, acute sciatica recovers automatically in a few weeks.

  • Chronic sciatica

The condition of long-lasting acute sciatica changes to chronic sciatica. Regular pain can disturb a person throughout his life. The pain a person experiences in chronic sciatica is often less severe than acute sciatica.

  • Alternating sciatica

Alternating sciatica is a kind of sciatica pain that alternately affects both legs of a person. This type of sciatica is rare which can develop in people due to degenerative problems in their sacroiliac joint.

  • Bilateral sciatica

Bilateral sciatica is a problem occurring in both legs simultaneously. This type of bilateral sciatica is rare. A person may have this problem due to several degenerative changes in their vertebrae or discs. Some severe conditions can also result from bilateral sciatica cauda equina syndrome under which a person's bladder motor and sensory functions are disrupted.

Complications of Sciatica

A person suffering from sciatica may face the following complications-

  • Increased pain and severe condition
  • Permanent nerve damage
  • Damage to bowel and bladder functions
