The following factors can be responsible for developing myasthenia gravis -
Myasthenia gravis can be considered an autoimmune disorder. The immune system of a person's body produces special proteins called antibodies to protect the body from foreign substances such as viruses, bacteria, fungus. These antibodies attack and destroy those foreign substances and thus protect the body. But sometimes for some reason, the immune system starts attacking the healthy tissues of the body. When it mistakenly attacks the neuromuscular junction where the motor neuron and muscle cells communicate with each other the neurons are unable to transmit the signal chemical element called acetylcholine to the muscles, in the absence of which the muscles become weak and the person gets myasthenia gravis.
The thymus gland is a special gland located in the upper chest below the middle bone called the breastbone. This gland is part of a person's immune system that triggers the production of acetylcholine-blocking antibodies and maintains its transmission. The thymus gland is smaller in healthy adults. But when for some reason a tumor starts forming in the thymus gland, this gland starts growing. Due to the enlargement of this gland, it is unable to trigger the production of antibodies that block acetylcholine, which leads to myasthenia gravis disorder in the person's body.
In some cases, myasthenia gravis may be hereditary, whereby mothers with myasthenia gravis have babies born with myasthenia gravis. Some babies are born with a rare, hereditary form of myasthenia gravis, called a congenital myasthenic syndrome.
Certain medications such as beta-blockers, quinidine gluconate, quinidine sulfate, quinine (Qualaquin), phenytoin, some anesthetics, and some antibiotics may play a major role in worsening myasthenia gravis.
Other factors responsible for increasing the chances of myasthenia gravis include any type of disease or infection that has been affecting a person for a long time and continues to weaken the muscles of their body, excessive mental or physical stress, any kind of surgery, etc.
Some of the following measures can help a person to prevent the development and progression of the symptoms of myasthenia gravis -
Symptoms and signs of myasthenia gravis include -
Myasthenia gravis is generally divided into five types -
Congenital myasthenia gravis occurs when a child inherits myasthenia gravis from both parents due to genetic defects. Congenital myasthenia gravis appears to result from mutations in genes involved in neuro-muscular communication or communication between nerve and muscle cells. The different types of congenital myasthenia gravis are defined by the location and type of genetic defect that causes impaired neuromuscular signaling.
When a person's muscles that control eye movements and eyelids become weak and tired easily, this condition is called ocular myasthenia gravis. Symptoms include drooping eyelids and double vision. Patients with ocular myasthenia gravis have symptoms only in the muscles of these locations, and the weakness and fatigue do not spread to other muscle groups.
In individuals with generalized myasthenia gravis, muscle weakness and fatigue are not limited to the eye muscles or other specific muscle groups. It can spread to the muscles of the face as well as the limbs. In about 10 percent of these individuals, muscle weakness extends to the respiratory muscles or to the muscles of the throat and jaw. This can make breathing very difficult and can be extremely serious.
Under transient neonatal myasthenia gravis, if a pregnant woman has myasthenia gravis, the baby may develop symptoms of the disease approximately 48 hours after birth. Symptoms include difficulty swallowing, Inability to cry, respiratory insufficiency, etc. However, these symptoms usually disappear within days or weeks.
It is a rare form of myasthenia gravis, thought to be an autoimmune disorder of the neuromuscular junction, resulting in ocular manifestations of generalized weakness in young people before the age of 18 years. In its mildest form in juvenile myasthenia gravis is confined to the eye muscles, but symptoms involving other muscle groups can be severe that begins before the onset of puberty. Symptoms include clumsiness, difficulty swallowing, and fatigue easily.
