There are two main types of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) –
It is the most common type of HIV and is considered to account for 95% of all infections. Left untreated, HIV-1 causes most people to eventually develop AIDS. The virus is considered the most common and most pathogenic. HIV-1 is grouped into simple groups called M, N, O, and P. Each group multiplies the number of HIV in a person's blood through its different subtypes and represents its independent spread. HIV-1 can critically damage a person's immune system because it attacks the body's immune system and destroys CD4 cells. Some people experience flu-like symptoms about 2 to 4 weeks after getting HIV-1, including fever, chills, fatigue, night sweats, muscle aches, sore throat, swollen lymph glands, cold sores, etc.
HIV-2 is rare in people and is more difficult to transmit from person to person than HIV-1. It takes longer for HIV-2 infection to turn into AIDS. It is divided into about eight groups from A to H, of which only groups A and B are considered an epidemic.
