Myasthenia Gravis Treatment

Overview

It is estimated that the prevalence of people with Myasthenia gravis in India is around 2-20 cases per 100,000 population.

Myasthenia gravis is a chronic autoimmune disorder characterized by muscle weakness and fatigue. It occurs when the body's immune system mistakenly targets and attacks the neuromuscular junction, which is the area where nerves connect with muscles. It disrupts the communication between nerves and muscles, leading to muscle weakness, especially in the face, eyes, throat, and limb muscles.

Myasthenia gravis causes weakness in the muscles of the body to such an extent that the person is unable to move the whole body, which severely affects the life of the individual.

Ayurveda views myasthenia gravis as a disturbance in the balance of doshas (vital energies) and aims to restore this balance through holistic approaches. Ayurvedic treatment for myasthenia gravis involves a combination of herbal remedies, lifestyle changes, and therapies like Cow Urine Therapy(detoxification treatments). Specific herbal formulations are used to support the nervous system, strengthen muscles, and boost the immune system.

Causes of Myasthenia Gravis

The following factors can be responsible for developing myasthenia gravis -

  • Autoimmune disorders

Myasthenia gravis can be considered an autoimmune disorder. The immune system of a person's body produces special proteins called antibodies to protect the body from foreign substances such as viruses, bacteria, fungus. These antibodies attack and destroy those foreign substances and thus protect the body. But sometimes for some reason, the immune system starts attacking the healthy tissues of the body. When it mistakenly attacks the neuromuscular junction where the motor neuron and muscle cells communicate with each other the neurons are unable to transmit the signal chemical element called acetylcholine to the muscles, in the absence of which the muscles become weak and the person gets myasthenia gravis.

  • Enlargement of the thymus gland

The thymus gland is a special gland located in the upper chest below the middle bone called the breastbone. This gland is part of a person's immune system that triggers the production of acetylcholine-blocking antibodies and maintains its transmission. The thymus gland is smaller in healthy adults. But when for some reason a tumor starts forming in the thymus gland, this gland starts growing. Due to the enlargement of this gland, it is unable to trigger the production of antibodies that block acetylcholine, which leads to myasthenia gravis disorder in the person's body.

  • Hereditary

In some cases, myasthenia gravis may be hereditary, whereby mothers with myasthenia gravis have babies born with myasthenia gravis. Some babies are born with a rare, hereditary form of myasthenia gravis, called a congenital myasthenic syndrome.

  • Some medicines

Certain medications such as beta-blockers, quinidine gluconate, quinidine sulfate, quinine (Qualaquin), phenytoin, some anesthetics, and some antibiotics may play a major role in worsening myasthenia gravis.

  • Other factors

Other factors responsible for increasing the chances of myasthenia gravis include any type of disease or infection that has been affecting a person for a long time and continues to weaken the muscles of their body, excessive mental or physical stress, any kind of surgery, etc.

Prevention from Myasthenia Gravis

Some of the following measures can help a person to prevent the development and progression of the symptoms of myasthenia gravis -

  • One should avoid taking excessive physical and mental stress.
  • One should give enough rest to his tired body and take necessary and sufficient deep sleep.
  • Regular consumption of a diet rich in nutritious elements strengthens the body's immune system and protects the body from diseases, infections, etc.
  • A person should protect his body from getting infected and if there is any disease or infection, it should be treated as soon as possible.
  • One should avoid doing excessive physical exertion.
  • Essential exercises for the body, such as yoga, workout, and walking, help the muscles to stay active.
  • A person should maintain his weight balanced and try to reduce the increased weight.
  • A person should avoid taking certain medications that can worsen the symptoms of myasthenia gravis.

Symptoms of Myasthenia Gravis

Symptoms and signs of myasthenia gravis include -

  • Weakness of arm and leg muscles
  • Trouble walking
  • Get tired very quickly
  • Difficulty swallowing or chewing
  • Double vision
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Heaviness of voice
  • Having trouble breathing
  • Being unable to climb stairs
  • No facial expression
  • Drooping eyelids
  • Having trouble lifting something

Types of Myasthenia Gravis

Myasthenia gravis is generally divided into five types -

  • Congenital myasthenia gravis

Congenital myasthenia gravis occurs when a child inherits myasthenia gravis from both parents due to genetic defects. Congenital myasthenia gravis appears to result from mutations in genes involved in neuro-muscular communication or communication between nerve and muscle cells. The different types of congenital myasthenia gravis are defined by the location and type of genetic defect that causes impaired neuromuscular signaling.

  • Ocular myasthenia gravis

When a person's muscles that control eye movements and eyelids become weak and tired easily, this condition is called ocular myasthenia gravis. Symptoms include drooping eyelids and double vision. Patients with ocular myasthenia gravis have symptoms only in the muscles of these locations, and the weakness and fatigue do not spread to other muscle groups.

  • Generalized myasthenia gravis

In individuals with generalized myasthenia gravis, muscle weakness and fatigue are not limited to the eye muscles or other specific muscle groups. It can spread to the muscles of the face as well as the limbs. In about 10 percent of these individuals, muscle weakness extends to the respiratory muscles or to the muscles of the throat and jaw. This can make breathing very difficult and can be extremely serious.

  • Transient neonatal myasthenia gravis

Under transient neonatal myasthenia gravis, if a pregnant woman has myasthenia gravis, the baby may develop symptoms of the disease approximately 48 hours after birth. Symptoms include difficulty swallowing,  Inability to cry, respiratory insufficiency, etc. However, these symptoms usually disappear within days or weeks.

  • Juvenile myasthenia gravis

It is a rare form of myasthenia gravis, thought to be an autoimmune disorder of the neuromuscular junction, resulting in ocular manifestations of generalized weakness in young people before the age of 18 years. In its mildest form in juvenile myasthenia gravis is confined to the eye muscles, but symptoms involving other muscle groups can be severe that begins before the onset of puberty. Symptoms include clumsiness, difficulty swallowing, and fatigue easily.

Complications of Myasthenia Gravis

A person suffering from myasthenia gravis may face the following complications -

  • A person suffering from this disease may have a myasthenic crisis in which the respiratory muscles become so weak that the person becomes very difficult to breathe.
  • The state of myasthenic crisis can prove to be fatal for a person.
  • The person may have a thyroid problem.
  • A person can become a victim of an autoimmune disease like lupus that can damage their heart, skin, kidneys, blood, and lungs.
  • A person can have rheumatoid arthritis.
