Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis Treatment

Overview

Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis is a form of arthritis in children that causes swelling and stiffness in their joints. This disease mostly affects children who are sixteen years of age or younger. This disease causes inflammation of the synovium in children. The synovium is a tissue that is present inside the joints and helps them to function properly. This disease is also known as Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA). This type of arthritis is considered an auto-immune disorder. The immune system inside our body protects our body from foreign substances. But when for some reason, the immune system protecting the body itself starts attacking the healthy tissues and cells of the body, due to that attack these tissues and healthy cells start getting destroyed. For this reason, when the synovium tissue gets damaged as a result of an attack by the immune system, a disease like Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis begins to occur. As a result, there is a problem of swelling, stiffness, redness, heat, pain, etc. in the joints for a long time. Some children may experience symptoms for only a few months, while others may have symptoms for many years.

Causes of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis

Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis occurs in children when their body's immune system attacks its own cells and tissues. It is difficult to know why the immune system is impaired in children who develop this disease, but some risk factors may be responsible for affecting the function of their immune system, including -

  • Heredity

A baby's immune system may be compromised due to certain genetic factors. A family history of autoimmune disease puts the child at higher risk. The risk of developing this type of autoimmune disease is linked to mutations in the child's HLA gene, affecting about a third of children.

  • Gender

Girls are almost three times more likely than boys to get an autoimmune disease, with teenage girls and young women at the highest risk. This is the reason why Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis most commonly affects young girls.

  • Age

Young age helps increase the risk of this disease. Most autoimmune diseases affect young and middle-aged people. Some diseases typically begin in childhood, including Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis and Juvenile dermatitis.

  • Other diseases

Children with one autoimmune disease have a higher risk of developing another. For example, children with type 1 diabetes are more likely to develop celiac disease or Addison's disease, or similar health conditions that can trigger their Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.

  • Environmental factors

Infection with certain types of viruses, bacteria, and toxins present in the environment makes children prone to autoimmune disorders. Due to which this condition increases the chances of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis among many other problems.

Prevention from Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis

Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis can be prevented from developing by making some lifestyle changes and adopting some good habits, which include -

  • During pregnancy, high nutritious diet should be consumed by women so that the child can get its benefits and be born with a healthy body.
  • By doing some physical exercise and workouts by pregnant women, the blood vessels of the baby remain more healthy, by which they are protected from many other diseases including the heart.
  • Parents should identify the specific genetic pattern of children predisposed to autoimmune disease so that a doctor can be consulted at the right time.
  • Children should be protected from exposure to environmental factors such as viruses, toxins, and bacteria.
  • Pregnant women should avoid taking excessive stress and should get enough sleep and adequate rest.
  • Special care should be taken not to increase other autoimmune diseases such as type 1 diabetes in children.
  • Regular consumption of healthy food by children strengthens their body and their immune system.
  • Consumption of plenty of fruits, green vegetables, and milk, etc. helps in keeping the child's body disease-free.

Symptoms of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis

Symptoms and signs of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis include -

  • Joint pain
  • Large joint swelling
  • Decreased joint mobility
  • Hardness
  • Fever
  • Spotty rash and rash on hands and feet
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Anemia
  • Knee stiffness
  • Swollen lymph nodes

Types of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis

Children can develop three types of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis based on the symptoms of the disease, the number of joints, and the presence of certain antibodies in the blood. These include -

  • Oligoarticular

This type of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis affects some of the joints in children. This type of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis affects about 50% of children. Girls under 8 years of age are more likely to develop oligoarticular. It is also known as pauciarticular and monoarticular. It usually affects only one joint of the child, including their knee or ankle. In some cases, it affects more than one joint in the child, which can be four or more. Symptoms are common in the eyes. Most often this arthritis is very mild and over time, the symptoms may subside or may be completely removed.

  • Polyarticular

This type of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis affects about 30% of children, mostly girls. It affects more than five joints in children, including their hands and feet. Usually, the affected joints are on both sides of the body. This type of juvenile arthritis can also affect large joints. The more severe form of the disease occurs in children with a certain antibody called immunoglobulin M (IgM) in the blood to the rheumatoid factor (RF). In polyarticular, this IgM RF antibody starts attacking the body's tissues. Common symptoms include swelling of the hands and toes.

  • Systemic

Systemic Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis can be seen in about 20% of children. This type of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis causes swelling, pain, and limited range of motion in at least one joint in children. The affected child has had a high fever for more than 2 weeks. Additional symptoms include rash and swelling in internal organs such as the heart, liver, spleen, and lymph nodes. If a child with the systemic disease is not treated adequately, many of their joints can develop severely over a long period.

Complications of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis

Children suffering from Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis may face the following complications -

  • The disease can also affect the baby's heart, lungs, eyes, and nervous system.
  • In children, episodes of this type of arthritis can last for several weeks and may recur.
  • This disease causes problems in the physical development of children.
  • Long periods of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis cause joint damage.
  • This disease can cause inflammation in children's eyes. If this condition is left untreated, it can result in cataracts, glaucoma, and even blindness.
  • Depending on the severity of the disease and the joints involved, growth in a child's affected joints and adjacent bones may be very rapid or very slow. Due to which one leg or arm may be longer than the other.
  • A child's height can be affected by this disease and their overall growth may be slower than normal.
  • Jaw abnormalities may also occur in the child.
