Glioma Treatment

Glial cells found in the nervous system are the cells that play a special role in repairing as well as maintaining balance in the nervous system. As supporting cells of the nervous system, they protect the excitable arabinose cells of the brain called neurons, insulates them, and provides the metabolic function for neurons. By which these cells can exchange and analyze information with the brain and do many other tasks. These glial cells are of three types, which are known as ependymal, oligodendrocytes, astrocytes glial cells. When these glial cells start to develop abnormally for some reason, these cells start forming a tumor. Because of the formation in the glial cells, it is known as Glioma. It is a common type of tumor arising in the brain. About 33 percent of all brain tumors are Gliomas, which arise in glial cells. This tumor is found mostly in the brain and spinal cord. Some Gliomas can be fatal and some affect brain function.

Causes of Glioma

It is difficult to determine what causes Glioma, but some risk factors may be considered responsible for increasing the risk of Glioma, including -

  • Age

As the age of a person increases, the risk of brain tumors also increases. Individuals between the ages of 45 and 65 are at a higher risk of developing Glioma. The risk of getting Glioma increases with age. Although brain tumors can occur at any age. Certain types of Glioma, such as ependymoma and pilocytic astrocytoma, may be more common in children and young adults.

  • Radiation exposure

People exposed to radiation have a significantly increased risk of developing Gliomas. People who are exposed to a type of radiation called ionizing radiation have an increased risk of brain tumors. These include radiation therapy used to treat cancer and radiation exposure caused by nuclear bombs.

  • Family history

However, it is rare for Gliomas to pass from member to member in families. But having a family history of Glioma can double your risk of developing it.

  • Hereditary disorder

Certain genes may be weakly linked to Gliomas. Certain hereditary disorders such as neurofibromatosis type 1 and type 2 and tuberous sclerosis may contribute to the development of Gliomas, as well as various oncogenes that may contribute to the development of Gliomas that have the potential to cause cancer.

  • Other factors

Other risk factors for developing a Glioma include infection with cytomegalovirus, certain diets containing N nitroso compounds, pesticide exposure, etc. that may play a great role in the development of this type of tumor.

Prevention from Glioma

A person can reduce the risk of Glioma by making some important lifestyle changes. These include -

  • We should be aware of the side effects of radiation and protect ourselves from coming in contact with them as much as possible.
  • We should completely give up habits like tobacco, smoking, and excessive consumption of alcohol.
  • Persons who engage in activities where there is a release of carcinogenic chemicals should protect themselves completely and every effort should be made to prevent these chemicals from entering the body by covering themselves.

  • Back pain
  • Numbness in hands and feet
  • Extreme tiredness and weakness
  • Physical imbalance

Types of Glioma

Several types of glial cells make up a tumor. Based on these cells, the types of Glioma are as follows -

  • Ependymomas

Ependymomas are tumors that develop in ependymal cells. They begin in the areas of the brain and spinal cord that line the pathways where the fluid that nourishes a person's brain, called cerebrospinal fluid, flows. It can happen to a person at any age but is mostly seen in young children. Because of this children may experience headaches and seizures. Ependymomas in adults are more likely to form in the spinal cord and can cause weakness in the part of the body that is controlled by the nerves affected by the tumor.

  • Astrocytomas

Astrocytoma begins in cells called astrocytes that support nerve cells. Astrocytomas can form in the brain or spinal cord. Astrocytoma in the brain can cause seizures, headaches, and nausea. Astrocytomas that occur in the spinal cord can cause weakness and disability in the affected area. An astrocytoma can be either a slow-growing tumor or aggressive cancer.

  • Oligodendrogliomas

Oligodendrogliomas are abnormal tumors of glial cells called oligodendrocytes that affect the brain and spinal cord. Oligodendrogliomas can occur at any age, but mostly affect adults. Signs and symptoms may include seizures and headaches. This can cause weakness or disability in the part of the body that is controlled by the nerve cells affected by the tumor.

Complications of Glioma

A person suffering from Glioma can face many complications –

  • The increasing size of the tumor can cause the brain to swell.
  • Gliomas can put pressure on parts of the brain, causing a person to have severe headaches, nausea, and vomiting.
  • It affects the activities of a person's daily living.
